Zaki Badawi Memorial Lecture 2009
Martin Rose: A Shared Past for a Shared Future - European Muslims and History-making
In June 2009, Martin Rose presented the third annual Zaki Badawi Memorial Lecture at the University of Westminster. The Lecture was established by the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS) UK in honour of the life and work of Sheikh Zaki Badawi, OBE, KBE.In their foreword, Dr Anas S. Al-Shaikh-Ali and Shiraz Khan from AMSS say: 'Martin Rose’s bird’s eye exploration of the essential elements of our self-perception offers a much-needed insight into the methodology and relevance of history. This is vital since history is far more than a simple representation of events that have occurred in the near or distant past. The present is in fact a result of the past, and a mirror of a people’s past mistakes and achievements. Ideally history should help human beings to correct the mistakes they may have made earlier and to draw inspiration and strength from the very best they may have achieved.'
